The first thing that you will have to do is choose a color – sounds like no-brainer, right? Well, you’d be surprised to know that many people have no idea what they want prior to heading to the paint store. While you can choose a color once you arrive at the store, it is recommended that you really consider the overall look of your kitchen, pick up a few swatches, leave them on your wall for one week, and then see which swatch you gravitate towards. So, once you have chosen that color you will need to know how to paint kitchen cabinets like a pro.

Painting your cabinets as they are may seem like a good idea, but it is best to remove your existing cabinets, take apart any hardware that is currently adorning them, and lay your cabinets down on a covered surface. Then, sand your cabinets if they need sanding (if you don’t sand wooden cabinets, you can expect the wood grain to shine through), and apply a primer. Wait for the primer to dry before you continue (in fact, you may even want to apply two coast of primer). Now, you are ready to get out that brush and paint.

Most of the time, a matte paint will serve this purpose best (though some people prefer a glossy look). Paint your cabinets carefully making sure to move the brush in the same direction every time. Once you have covered the front and sides of your cabinet, you can then move to the back (if you choose to). As with the primer, apply two coats of the paint – be careful not to cover the hardware holes with paint! – allowing the cabinets to dry completely. Now that you know how to paint kitchen cabinets, you can put them back in place once again.
