Kitchen Lighting Ideas

Let there be light! There are many kitchen lighting ideas to consider, though there is one basic design concept to keep in mind at all times no matter how big or small your space may be.

The trick to any fabulous design is to remember that light comes in all shades. What does this mean? Well, look around you the next time that you step outside. You will notice that some areas of your backyard are drenched in light, while others tend to play in the shade. Mother Nature knows that the best lighting design is the one that incorporates many different types of lights, and this is precisely what you want to aim for. Unfortunately, most people simply install overhead bright lights, though there are many other ways to really help your space to shine. The following kitchen lighting ideas will work well in any type of space.

The first thing to think about is the food that you will be preparing inside of your space (makes sense, right?). It would be nearly impossible to sauté, dice, and fry inside of a room that only includes dim lighting, so add some overhead recessed (these are nice design-wise) lights to the space first. Then, think about adding some lights to your backsplash area (great for food prep, or sneaking into the kitchen to steal that last piece of chocolate cake). Also, think about whether or not you may want to entertain inside of your kitchen area.

Since kitchens are quickly becoming the most popular room inside of any home, many people now set up small dining spaces where romantic meals can be served. If you intend to do this, creating a small space for two (or four) with some tall standing lights is a good idea. Just make sure that this intimate corner is out of any chaotic area. Other kitchen lighting ideas include backlit cabinets, lighting under cabinets, counter top lighting, and lights that come on when motion is detected.

See how many great things you can do with light in your kitchen? Forget about illuminating the entire room with fluorescent light, and stick to the rules of Mother Nature instead. There is no such thing as one shade of light for an entire area, so go ahead and play around with a few lights until you get it right.

From a largely lighted counter area to some soft backlights for those romantic meals, kitchen lighting ideas are limitless. Use your imagination, come up with some great ways to show off your space, and get read for lots of lovely light.
